“She’s milking the drama for all she’s worth,” Lila sneered at her grandmother, now draped across the couch in the games’ room with her cronies hovering nearby.

“At least we know where she is.” Holly shrugged. “She could disappear and then we’d have no idea what Elspeth-caused mayhem was headed our way.”

“I’m glad I don’t have to arrest her again.” Braun grimaced. “Mom refused to cook for a week after the last time. My attempt at honey buns broke Caleb’s fang.”

Everyone in the Braun clan had a sweet tooth, but anything connected to honey sent bears crazy. Xandie could imagine Caleb gnawing desperately on Zach’s over-baked honey bun.

“I’m glad your mom, Marjorie and Winifred are here to run herd on her.” Xandie lowered her voice. “Did you find out any extra information on Reed?”

“I searched his room. Caleb and Riley searched the summerhouse and the lawyer’s room again. Came up with nothing. But considering the reputation he has of underhanded dealings, I’m betting you’re right about him kidnapping the lawyer and stealing the will and map.”

“Is he a killer?”

Aggie wandered over to Xandie and Braun and overheard Xandie’s question. “I assume you’re talking about that worm, Reed? In the right situation, he’d definitely strike first and ask questions later. Watch him. He’s dangerous if crossed.”

Xandie hugged Aggie. “We will, don’t worry. Besides, you have Elspeth and Colin duty. That’s more dangerous.”

Aggie pinched Xandie’s cheeks. “You’re cute. Speaking of Elspeth, she wants someone to read to her. Apparently, Holly has a lovely speaking voice.”

“No. Way.” Holly popped up next to Xandie, shaking her head wildly. “Never again. I swore the last time she threw the book at me, no more reading.”

Lila bent over, chortling. “So funny. Elspeth had a sprained ankle, and Holly offered to read to her, except she has a habit of putting on a different voice for each character. Drove Elspeth batty to the point she threw the book at Holly.”

“I had a bruise for a week on my forehead. Right in the middle of it.” Holly jabbed her head.

Aggie wrapped an arm around Holly’s waist. “Now, now, Banshee. It’ll be fine. Don’t you want dear old Elspeth kept quiet?” Aggie nodded suggestively at the prone Elspeth. “I’ll protect you, sweetie.” The bear guided Holly away. “I’m sure your cousins will scoot straight off to the library and pick something appropriate for you to read.”

At least Holly would keep Elspeth occupied for a while. “We’ll jump right on that, Aggie.” And she’d search the library for the missing journal at the same time. Xandie blew a kiss goodbye to Zach and dragged Lila out of the games’ room.

“Why so eager to volunteer us? We’ve been slaving this whole weekend as it is.”

“Because, dear Lila, Henry Hedgewater confirmed there is a journal penned by the murdered Sarah.”

“Murder confirmed? Not a lovelorn suicide?”

“Hedgewater confirmed Abigail’s version of the story. I guess the other rumor placed the Captain in a better light than that of the murderer, so that’s what the family ran with over the years.
